An historic listed “K6” red phone box, situated on Ashford’s High Street, will go under the hammer at an online auction this month.
These bright red “Jubilee” kiosks, designed to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V, are one of Britain’s most iconic features. Their creator, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is also known for designing Battersea Power Station, Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral and Bankside Power Station, which is now the Tate Modern.
The distinctive kiosk is being sold by BidX1, who specialise in online property transactions, at their auction on 25th March.
Mat Harris, Director at BidX1, commented: “This is a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic piece of British heritage, with potential for multiple alternative uses – Historic England are seeking to preserve these much-loved red kiosks, and buyers throughout England have transformed them into coffee shops, mini-libraries, bakeries and even defibrillators.
“In Cheltenham, 10 red phone boxes have been transformed into miniature art galleries, showcasing the work of local artists”, he continued.
The firm has listed the 8'3" high x 3ft square kiosk, which is located in Middle Row, just off the High Street in Ashford, with a guide price of £5,000.
The auctioneers have noted that although the purchaser will own the asset and can re-sell it at any time, the phone box is a listed heritage site and so cannot be removed, nor can the exterior be altered.
